U.S. Army comes full circle (or should we say Square) in
Vehicle Camouflage
(May
16, 2006 Vancouver, B.C.)
HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp. recently announced a new program called
conSEALment™ (Camouflage adhesive
vinyl), it may surprise many that the first customer was the U.S. Army!
Actual "Universal Camouflage" printed vinyl
wrapped HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle - otherwise known
as a HumVee or Military Hummer):
Highet Kräcker Design
was contacted by the North Carolina Guard Recruiting and Retention Command
to complete a Project for the Command to apply the new U.S. Army "Universal
Camouflage" pattern to one of their military Hummers. Difficulty arose in
the pattern transfer from uniform to vinyl and HyperStealth was contacted.
HyperStealth has been working with camouflage printed vinyl projects for
military applications and large structure concealment for 16 months and they
are just in the process of offering this technology to the
general public under their "conSEALment" name. The photos on
this site with chrome wheels is the HumVee in its final form (click photos
to enlarge).
The pattern supplied by HyperStealth to
Highet Kräcker for this project is not the same pattern used on the ACU
uniform but a replica of the Universal Camouflage designed by HyperStealth
which was used in past research programs. When the National Guard Command
saw the HyperStealth pattern they approved this one for use on the Hummer.
Highet Kräcker printed
and installed the material, and worked with Hyperstealth in determining the
production requirements
for this project.
HyperStealth did not ask for royalties as they treat this replica pattern as
official United States Government property. HyperStealth will not allow or
supply this pattern outside of the U.S. Army, without permission of the
Department of the Army.
Half of the HyperStealth Camouflage
development and design team is Lt. Col. Timothy R. O'Neill, Ph.D. (U.S.
Army, Ret.), Lt. Col. O'Neill initiated the modern camouflage evolution with
his DualTex patten used by the U.S. Army 2nd Armored Calvary
Regiment in Europe from 1978-the early 1980’s:
http://www.uniteddynamics.com/dualtex/. Almost 30 years later the design
has come full circle (or shall we say full square) and the U.S. Army once
again is applying pixalated camouflage on their vehicles based on his
initial work.
Lt. Col. O'Neill continues to develop
advanced camouflage patterns for the U.S. Military.
This U.S. Army pattern requirement for the
HMMWV is not for combat, it is meant for recruiting purposes only.
